My father Pierre Hertement, the oldest son of a family of 8 children, two of which died during the se-
cond world war, was born in October 8th, 1931, in the commune of Ferrières en Bray in Seine-Mari -
time. At the time, his own parents Emile 26 years old and Reine 28, my grandparents, were 'just-mar -
ried and were living in the homestead of the Manais at the farm of the 1730 castle on the right wing of
the beautiful building at August and Marie Hertement's, born Cresson. Farmers, they operated a farm
of more than a hundred and fifty cows on the Gervais's property. The two families were appreciating
each others so well that August and Mary made Charles the godfather to their son Emile and Charles
Gervais put my great great grand dad on his will but when time came, a terrible fire destroyed every-
thing and reduced to nothing all they hopes. Two severe years of ulceros fever touched the cattle
(fièvre Aphteuse) the previous and following years reducing to nothing the fruit of a lifetime of labor.
The whole family left the propriety the following days after my dad's birth in October 1931 -probably
because they didn't want my grandma to give birth on the way- and left the farm leaving all behind to
settle in a place called 'Le Lion d'Or' in Normandie close to Croissanville on Paris road half way bet-
ween Caen and Lisieux. They stayed there until they both died keeping in mind the unforgettable pas -
sing of the Liberators in June 1944 spreading chewing-gum to all the kids waving (...) while my grand-
parents went to live in Croissanville and my dad, soon after his military service met my mum and deci -
ded to rent a a flat in the downer town of Mezidon-Canon in a farmhouse 39bis Jules Guesde road
where my brother and I spent our childhood. My grandfather Emile, while having the chance to conti-
nue his studies at the ' age of beauty’, worked on his own after the war but, then, decided to Join the
ranks of truck driver employees at the Courrier Normand Cie while Reine, his wife, was helping him
supporting the needs of the family as a postmistress.

To find the genesis of the story of Gervais-Danone, take the direction of the country of Bray, renowned
for its butter and creamy milk. One morning in 1850, Charles Gervais, committed to an important agent
of the Halles de Paris, learns that a farmer's wife, Mrs. Hérould, has the recipe well guarded the more
exquisite white cheese of Normandy. Conquered, he moved immediately to the Manais farm to pursue
his production. The success was immediate and growing demand forced him to move. He buys so, a
few kilometres away, the farm of the Estre, who would later become the great factory of Ferrières-
Bray. From 1872, is born a second product Gervais, whose popularity will soon match that of the yo-
ghourts.It's the famous fresh square. While the company is still very traditional, the grandson of the
founder, Charles Gervais, completely modernized the factory and thus placed the House Gervais at
the forefront of progress in the dairy industry.
Progress halted by the bombs of World War II, who will reason the factory Gervais in just 35 minutes.
But that's not counting on the determination of Gervais, who appealed to a brilliant architect to rebuild
a State of the art plant.
